Many spectators in Lisbon will remember the previous visit paid to the capital by this South African theatre company, one of the mainstays of modern-day theatre, with performances such as Faustus in Africa or Il Ritorno d’Ulisse.
The Handspring Puppet Company will begin the series of live performances with their own very special adaptation of Georg Buchner’s play Woyzeck. In this version, Woyzeck is an immigrant worker in the industrial area of Johannesburg in 1956, and the theme remains the same as before: jealousy, murder and conflict between the individual and social repression. With this production, the famous puppet theatre company directed by Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones began their collaboration with William Kentridge, a South African visual artist, filmmaker and, in this case, the director responsible for some of the most innovative stage directions and exhibitions of the last two decades.
