Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou
Benin
27 Jun 2010 - 19:00
Open Air Amphitheatre
This legendary and almost forgotten orchestra from Benin, which first achieved fame in the 1960s and 1970s, now returns to concerts after its back catalogue was recently rediscovered by record companies such as Analog Africa and Soundway Records.
The greatest exponents of what can be called voodoo funk, this orchestra is the perfect example of the “exchange of stimuli and influences” that took place between North American funk bands and musicians from the west coast of Africa during the golden decades of funk, when both sides of the Atlantic were seeking to find (and sometimes creating) points of contact between their respective musical vocabularies.
