Europe and Africa are both important parts of the personality of Baloji, a Congolese musician living in Brussels. This geographical bipolarity can be clearly seen in his artistic project, which combines the fluidity of hip-hop with highly passionate soul or highlife music, always played by the omnipresent sub-Saharan voodoo.
Baloji faithfully portrays a post-exotic Africa, uninhibitedly assimilating the intercontinental to and fro of influences and information and mainly showing himself to be aware of the issues raised by the postcolonial debate. Baloji is a member of a proud line of African musicians characterised by their solid and almost cynical political awareness, although not devoid of hope. However, in one of his performances, one is never without a strong sense of fun and entertainment.
